Every legitimate online casino license has two things a fake one never bothers to fake convincingly: a specific license number and a public regulator register where that exact number can be looked up independently. Before you deposit anything, don't trust the badge in the footer — go to the regulator's own website and search the number yourself.
For the three licenses you'll see most often: the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) runs a public license search at its own site; the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) publishes a full register of licensed businesses; and Curaçao moved in 2023 from a fragmented "master license" system to a single Curaçao Gaming Control Board register that replaced the old sub-license model. All three are free and take under a minute to check.
Red flags worth walking away from: a license number that returns no match (or a different company name) on the regulator's own register, a license badge with no link at all, or a site that says "licensed" without ever printing an actual number. A real license is boring and verifiable — a fake one is vague on purpose.
